How to Protect Expensive Home Accessories from Getting Rusted
Are you worried about rust forming on your household
items? Are you looking for ways to prevent rusting? Today we are going to
elaborate on how to protect your household accessories from getting rusted. Rust
can a major annoyance if it stains your clothes, imitation jewelry or your
tools. And if you possess furniture that has metal chassis, you do not want the
rust to take over the elegance and beauty of your furniture plus rusted items
looks not only cheap but old and unpleasant to look at. Rust usually occurs due
to an electrochemical reaction between the metal and the oxygen in the air. We
cannot remove oxygen from the air since we need to breathe but what we can do
is take measures to protect the metal from getting rusted. Following are some
ways in which you can protect your household items from getting rusted.
Protecting the Metal:
As they say that prevention is better than cure, keeping
that in mind there are various ways in which you can prevent the rust from your
metal furniture.
Galvanization:
Galvanization is a process in which metals are coated
with a layer of zinc. Zinc prevents the process of rusting as it is more
reactive to oxygen and thus gets oxidized more actively, preventing the metal underneath
it.
Paint:
Painting the metal surface is yet another way to prevent
rusting or at least prolong the process of it. Using paint actually creates a
barrier between the metal and the oxygen in the atmosphere, thus preventing the
metal from rusting. For example, if you have a metal fence around your house,
painting it would not only prevent the fence from rusting but also give your
house a beautiful look.
Electroplating:
Electroplating is not much of prevention as it is the
cure but can be used as a means of prevention. Electroplating is basically reversing
the process of rusting, for instance, if you possess imitation jewelry or
silver cutlery that is showing signs of rust and age then through the process
of electroplating your jewelry & cutlery can look brand new. What happens
during electroplating is one metal (more reactive one) is used to cover the
other metal by means of hydrolysis. There are also types of electroplating,
such as silver plating, copper plating and more.
Anti-Rust Solutions:
You will find plenty of liquid solutions in your nearest
superstore such as alkaline phosphate or alkaline chromate, these solutions act
as anti-rust. You just need to dip the item, you want to protect from rusting,
into the above-mentioned solution and by doing so a protective film is formed
on your item thus protecting it from rusting.
If you have a spring mattress at home, remember those
springs are made of metal and can corrode or get rusted, so to prevent those springs
from getting rusted you can get an extra deep mattress
protector double.
Metals like iron can be simply protected by preventing
contact with rain, humidity, and water. If you have outdoor metal furniture,
place it under a shade away so it does not get wet during rainfall. Use WD-40,
a spray easily available out in the market. Using WD-40 leaves behind a coating
that prevents the metal from reacting with the oxygen in the air.
